Neurorehabilitation in a patient with cervical spinal trauma and its evolution

Abstract

Spinal cord injury is an injury to the structures of the spinal cord, which generates complications and compromises its functional independence. It affects more men than women of productive age, mainly caused by falls, traffic accidents or acts of violence. The objective was to apply neurorehabilitation therapeutic strategies in a patient with cervical spinal cord injury C3-C6 and its evolution in functional independence. Case presentation: Male patient with C3 to C6 cervical injury who falls from the fourth floor, fixation surgery is performed and remains in Intensive Care for a month and a half, with a total hospitalization of 5 months, then he is discharged with medication and with the minimum care required, he cannot move any limb except for his right hand, whose mobility is minimal. He is dependent in all activities of daily living, however he can swallow and speak, has hypertonia and alterations in his posture, coordination and balance, and spends all his time in a sitting position, he also has sphincter control. Neurorehabilitation is an essential factor in the recovery of skills lost due to an acquired pathology, such as spinal cord injury. It is important to improve his positioning so that the activities of daily life are progressively fulfilled according to his abilities, it is necessary to mention the importance of the accompaniment and family environment that directly influence the patient's recovery.
