In order to evaluate the antimicrobial resistance of Proteus mirabilis, isolated from chicken meat sold in Ambato, samples were previously collected in the city of Ambato, Ecuador, taken randomly from formal (45) and informal (45) sales centers and from slaughterhouses supplying the city (45), resulting in a total of 135 samples, which were stored at -20 ° C. For the following investigation, 15 molecularly identified strains were used and the agar diffusion method (Kirby-Bauer) was determined by the following: amikacin, gentamicin, ciprofloxacin, ceftriaxone and amoxicillin / clavulanic acid. The results showed high sensitivity to aminoglycosides, significant resistance to fluoroquinolones and intermediate resistance to amoxicillin / clavulanic acid. The associated molecular mechanisms include the production of BLEE, modifications in porins and efflux pumps. The most resistant strains originated from licensed and informal retail outlets, reflecting deficiencies in sanitary quality control. The presence of this bacterium in meat products poses a public health risk due to its ability to cause infections after consumption. These findings underscore the need for strategies to mitigate antimicrobial resistance and improve food safety practices.
