Survival behavior of the paiche (Arapaima gigas) in the Ecuadorian Amazon: opportunities for sustainable development in indigenous communities

The aim of this research was to evaluate the survival of Arapaima gigas (paiche) fingerlings under conditions in the Ecuadorian Amazon. The study was conducted at the Virgen del Cisne farm, located in Sucumbíos, Ecuador, at 297 masl, with an average temperature of 25 °C and a relative humidity of 81 %. Two breeding pairs were used. The fingerlings were harvested when they were observed swimming around the mother. They were subsequently transferred to the laboratory and maintained in tanks at 23 °C. Collection 1 of fingerlings from breeding pair 1 showed approximately 52 % survival, compared to breeding pair 2, which showed 77 %. However, in the same breeding pair, but in collection 2, the survival percentage was observed to increase, to approximately 81% and 86%, respectively. Under the conditions of this study, it can be concluded that captive breeding of Paiche can reach more than 77 % survival when considering aspects such as low collection by arretes, no sudden changes in feeding and temperature control through water exchanges.
