Abstract

The research that supports this article aimed to conduct an in-depth analysis of the circular economy as a true development alternative. It was supported by bibliographical research, theoretical methods such as synthetic analysis, documentary review, and inductive-deductive methods. These methods led to the conclusion that: The circular economy is not only an environmental theory, but a viable and urgent development proposal for the agricultural sector. Ecuador has laid the groundwork with policies such as the National Strategy for an Inclusive Circular Economy (ENECI), demonstrating clear political will. However, the main challenge lies in translating these theoretical frameworks into concrete and accessible actions for farmers. Local success stories, such as the valorization of cocoa by-products or the management of pesticide residues in the province of Chimborazo, are proof that the knowledge and capacity for innovation exist. The consolidation of the circular economy in the Ecuadorian countryside requires a coordinated, multisectoral effort. The lack of technical training and difficult access to financing are barriers that can only be overcome through collaboration between government, academia, and the private sector. It is imperative to create agricultural extension programs that educate farmers about circular practices and establish accessible credit funds so they can invest in sustainable technologies. For farmers, the circular economy represents an invaluable opportunity to diversify their income and reduce dependence on expensive inputs. The valorization of byproducts and the creation of industrial symbioses not only strengthen local economies but also increase the sector's resilience to global market volatility. It is through these new business models that Ecuadorian agriculture can ensure a more prosperous and sustainable future.
