The ecuadorian judicial system: an analysis of intentional murders of women and femicides (2014-2023)

Abstract

Violence against women has emerged as a growing global concern, exacerbated by sociocultural changes and technological advancements. Framed by the United Nations as any act of violence based on female gender, its ramifications encompass physical, sexual, and psychological harm. In Ecuador, visibility and institutional responses to this issue have evolved significantly since the 1980s, with the enactment of laws and ratification of international conventions. Despite advances such as the National Plan to Eradicate Gender Violence and the National Gender Equality Agenda, challenges persist, as evidenced by recent statistics on homicides and femicides. Policy analysis reveals a complex interplay between legislation and practice, highlighting the need for ongoing assessments to enhance effectiveness and ensure equitable justice. This historical and analytical study not only provides a detailed overview of the evolution of gender violence in Ecuador but also offers a critical framework for future public policies and academic studies in the field.
