Evaluation of the inclusion of brewer's spent grain in broiler feeding to promote sustainable production and added value in rural areas

Abstract

The objective of the research was to evaluate the inclusion of beer barley in the feed of broiler chickens to promote sustainable production and added value in rural areas. The work was carried out at the Amazon Experimental Research and Production Center (CEIPA) of the Amazon State University located between the provinces of Pastaza and Napo. 280 broiler chickens of the Cobb 500 line with 21 days of life and an average weight of 897.11 g were used, 3 treatments and a control were established for the growth and fattening stages: T0 (commercial feed), T1 (commercial feed + 5% brewer's barley) T2 (commercial feed + 10% brewer's barley), T3 (commercial feed + 15% brewer's barley), with 5 repetitions for each treatment, with 14 experimental units per repetition, the data obtained for each variable were statistically analyzed in the statistical software Statistical Analysis System (SAS), to compare means between treatments the Tukey test was applied, to identify if poultry farmers know about brewer's barley, a structured survey was applied to 50 producers in order to record important information about the use of alternative feeds, the information was analyzed through descriptive statistics with a frequency table. The results showed that T0 and T1 reached similar values ​​in certain productive parameters being T1 the one that registered the best values ​​in PF (2587.33 g), GP (1693.75 g), GDP (76.98 g/day), CA (1.79), IEA (144.19) and the highest B/C ratio with 1.32, however, in feed consumption T0 (3320.94) and T3 (3320.19) obtained high and similar values, indicating that T1 is the most suggested alternative to improve performance in broiler chickens under the conditions studied at the same time it is favorable that 86% of poultry farmers know about barley, even though they have not used it, but 56% know about conventional and alternative feeding systems, which indicates that they do apply alternative foods from the area.
