Holistic care: integration of body, mind and spirit in critical care units

Holistic care in critical care units addresses the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of patients, seeking to improve both clinical outcomes and overall well-being in highly complex settings. The objective of this study was to describe the influence of holistic care on the quality of care in intensive care units, analyzing the factors that limit its implementation based on a literature review. A literature review was conducted, in which a critical and reflective analysis of the literature content was performed. Critical analysis was conducted using an inductive approach. After applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, an initial population of 42 scientific articles was identified. A final sample of 25 original articles was selected, published in English, Spanish, and Portuguese, and retrieved from databases such as Scopus, PubMed, Dialnet, SciELO, Elsevier, Latindex, and Google Scholar. This study demonstrated the importance of integrating physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being in ICUs to improve outcomes. However, challenges such as staff shortages and a lack of ongoing training were encountered. Overcoming these barriers was key to achieving humane, quality care.
