Abstract

Sensory tourism in Ecuador has established itself as an innovative approach that enriched visitors' experiences by engaging all five senses. With the goal of generating more intense and meaningful memories, various strategies are implemented that incorporate visual, auditory, tactile, olfactory, and gustatory stimuli in different tourist settings across the country. These approaches were applied in natural, cultural, and gastronomic settings, providing more immersive and authentic experiences for travelers. Tourism service providers design itineraries that leverage the visual impact of natural landscapes and historic architecture, complementing them with the characteristic sounds of nature and traditional Ecuadorian music. Tactile experiences were also integrated, allowing tourists to interact with handicrafts, textures of local biodiversity, and ancestral treatments, such as volcanic mud baths. The sense of smell was stimulated with tours of spice markets, coffee plantations, and cacao farms, while taste took center stage during tastings of Ecuador's diverse cuisine. Personalized technology plays a key role in sensory immersion, through tools such as augmented reality and surround sound in museums and interpretation centers. Ultimately, sensory tourism has contributed to strengthening cultural identity and boosting the local economy, offering differentiated experiences tailored to travelers' expectations.
