Abstract

The present study, conducted at the Jakalurco Aquaculture Farm, in the Pastaza prefecture of Ecuador, evaluated the endocrine and physiological response of broodstock tilapia (Oreochromis sp.) under Amazonian conditions (pH: 5; water temperature: 19–26 °C; DO: 6.4 ppm; humidity: 88%; precipitation: 2233 mm). Fifteen fish aged 2.5 years with an average weight of 2360 g were analyzed. Blood samples were collected during two time periods (10:00 and 15:00 h), with cortisol levels measured using the Ichroma™ system and biochemical profiles (ALT, urea, creatinine) analyzed with a Diasys Vet device. Although no major differences in cortisol elevations were found between morning and afternoon (p=0.371), a higher average was observed in the afternoon (238.85 ± 61.82 ng/dL), with females showing a more stable response (CV: 15.57%) compared to males (CV: 36.25%), suggesting hormonal modulation related to sex and time of day. Morphometric parameters revealed highly significant sexual dimorphism, with males being heavier (2.84 ± 0.34 kg vs. 1.94 ± 0.31 kg; p<0.001), longer (49.07 ± 3.03 cm vs. 41.75 ± 3.66 cm; p=0.0010), and wider (16.43 ± 1.43 cm vs. 13.51 ± 1.48 cm; p=0.0019). In addition, the biomarkers ALT (CV: 143.79%) and creatinine (CV: 115.43%) showed high interindividual variability, indicating possible hepatic alteration or muscle-renal variability influenced by intensive management. These findings support the usefulness of physiological and biochemical indicators as comprehensive monitoring tools to improve welfare and reproductive performance in tropical aquaculture systems.
