Technological advancements have driven significant transformations in educational processes, generating new teaching and learning methodologies that redefine the roles of teachers and students in the 21st century. This paper examines the evolution of techno-pedagogical changes, from Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) to Learning and Knowledge Technologies (LKT), Empowerment and Participation Technologies (EPT), and the current emergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education as digital tools that foster civic participation in social, educational, and political spheres. These technologies aim to strengthen social cohesion by enabling individuals to share ideas, interests, and proposals in pursuit of common goals. The pedagogical contributions of each stage are highlighted, along with the challenges they entail and their ethical implications. A critical approach is proposed, positioning technology as a means rather than an end for the comprehensive development of students. This perspective is central to an ongoing research project on the use of AI for English language teaching in public educational institutions, conducted by Pedagogy of National and Foreign Languages program at the Universidad Estatal del Sur de Manabí.
