Antithyroid antibodies as a factor associated with the development of hypothyroidism in women with type 2 diabetes mellitus

Abstract

Hypothyroidism is the most frequent hormonal deficiency in clinical practice, the condition is particularly prevalent in older women, in whom autoimmune thyroiditis is common. The most common cause of primary hypothyroidism is autoimmune thyroiditis called Hashimoto's disease, which is more common in women with an increasing incidence during middle age. A systematic review was performed using PubMed (Medline) as the main database and other sources, Web of Science, Scopus and Science Direct. The review was carried out in the analysis of fifteen original articles related to the study variables whose main objective is to investigate the association between the obtained antithyroid drugs and the development of hypothyroidism in women with type 2 diabetes mellitus. According to the review of the articles, it is concluded that the failure to recognize the presence of abnormal thyroid function may be one of the main causes of poor management of diabetes mellitus; also, that thyroid dysfunction may provide a different metabolic risk than type 2 diabetes mellitus. The qualitative studies, treatments, and outcomes examined in each clinical trial were all different.
