Access to devices and connectivity in relation to self-perceived competence in artificial intelligence in students of higher technological education: a cross-sectional study

This study investigated the relationship between structural conditions (e.g., access to technological devices, connectivity, and self-perceived competence in Artificial Intelligence (AI)) among students at Instituto Superior Tecnológico Consulting Group Ecuador, Santo Domingo campus. This study was conducted in 137 students in a quantitative, observational, cross-sectional and analytical manner. In terms of usage and autonomy, AI competence was evaluated using four indicators. 83.2% of the students reported high self-perceived AI competence. Bivariate analysis and logistic regression indicated that having two or more types of technology (aOR = 5.06) and stable internet connection (aOR = 3.68) are closely linked to AI skills. By contrast, structural conditions, gender, area of residence and internet availability as a basic service were not significantly associated. The diverse devices and device connectivity were identified as the key factors to enhance the use of artificial intelligence in the educational environment analyzed in this research.
