Abstract

Diabetes is on the rise: No longer predominantly in rich countries, the prevalence of the disease is steadily increasing everywhere, especially in middle-income countries. According to the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INEC) in Ecuador, in 2019, diabetes mellitus was the second leading cause of death in the country, with a total of 4,890 deaths, of which 2,575 were women and 2,590 men. The objective of this research work is to evaluate the risk of presenting diabetes in the urban population, through the study of the anthropometric indicators of a sample of the urban population of the Jipijapa canton. This mixed study used a descriptive, literature review and phenomenological methodology. Qualitative data were collected through structured interviews and analyzed through a phenomenological-hermeneutical framework. From the total sample, 49 subjects under 35 years of age classified with moderate, high and very high risk of suffering from diabetes were selected, on whom a descriptive cross-sectional analysis was carried out in order to achieve the proposed objective. It can be confirmed that this disease can be prevented with adequate control, to stimulate and support the adoption of effective measures for surveillance, prevention and control of diabetes and its complications.
