Diabetes mellitus as a risk factor for morbidity and mortality from Covid-19 in adults

Abstract

Diabetic patients are susceptible to adverse outcomes and complications from Coronavirus. In addition, the coexistence of these two diseases has been associated with a worse prognosis and a higher risk of mortality, as well as requiring treatment in intensive care units, which is why the Coronavirus pandemic overlaps that of diabetes. The objective was to expose the risk of morbidity and mortality in patients with diabetes mellitus and Coronavirus in adults. A documentary design research methodology was applied with a descriptive and exploratory nature, the review of scientific articles in databases such as: PubMed, SciELO, Elsevier, World Health Organization, Pan American Health Organization, were used as search strategies. Redalyc, health reports, published between the years 2018-2022 from different countries, and without language restriction. 145 articles were selected under inclusion and exclusion criteria. The studies revealed a high global prevalence of 72.7% of diabetic patients with Coronavirus, and an overall mortality rate of 55.25% in relation to all studies. The findings showed that the most common comorbidities associated with the severity of the Coronavirus is diabetes mellitus, followed by; hypertension, liver disease, cerebrovascular, cardiovascular, and pneumonia. Finally, it was shown that diabetes mellitus is associated with Coronavirus, considered as one of the potential mechanisms that can increase susceptibility to Coronavirus, because they include a higher cell binding affinity and efficient virus entry, a decrease in viral clearance, and function of T cells.
