Guillain-Barre as a consequence of COVID-19. Literature review

Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) is a progressive polyneuropathy of unknown cause characterized by the destruction of peripheral nerves caused by the erroneous response of the individual's immune system, affecting motor or sensory functions, or both. The appearance of new cases of Guillain-Barre in the context of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic draws the attention of the medical population worldwide. An exhaustive search of case publications, meta-analyses and bibliographic reviews during the last 3 years that have veracity and scientific nature on the relationship between GBS and Covid-19 was carried out. In the following work, the possible routes of neuroinvasion of SARS-CoV-2 are written and how it can present central and peripheral neurological manifestations typical of Guillain-Barre. It was identified that there is a close relationship between these two pathologies and that more studies are needed on the pathophysiological mechanisms of SARS-CoV-2 in the nervous system.
