Prevalence of toxoplasmosis, risk factors and its association with pregnancy complications in Latin America

Abstract

Toxoplasmosis is the most frequent zoonosis in humans, this parasitosis caused by a protozoan known as Toxoplasma gondii, presents a risk of vertical transmission to the fetus in a primary infection during gestation, which can produce significant morbidity and mortality in the fetus and newborn with possible long-term sequelae in children and adults. The objective of this research was to analyze the prevalence of toxoplasmosis, risk factors and its association with gestational complications in Latin America. A systematic, descriptive, descriptive and explanatory documentary research was carried out. Through a bibliographic search in scientific databases such as: PubMed, SciELO, Elsevier, Google Scholar, Redalyc, Springer, and other sources such as Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), World Health Organization (WHO), books, and health reports. The most prevalent antibody was IgG type anti-T gondii, in a study conducted in Paraguay a prevalence of 63% was reported, in Argentina a study was described that presented an overall seroprevalence of 34.8%. The main risk factors found in the studies included in this review were consumption of non-drinking water, economic level, contact with cat feces, and living in rural areas.
