Cystatin C and Microalbuminuria as diagnostic test for early kidney damage in patients with diabetes mellitus

Diabetes affects 140 million people worldwide and early detection of diabetic nephropathy is crucial. New biomarkers such as cystatin C and microalbuminuria may be more sensitive indicators of early glomerular damage than serum creatinine. It is important to detect and treat diabetic nephropathy early to prevent complications and improve the patient's quality of life. The aim of the research was to analyze Cystanin C and microalbuminuria as diagnostic tests for early kidney damage in patients with diabetes mellitus. As a methodology, a systematic review was carried out in scientific databases such as PubMed, SciELO, Elsevier, Google Schoolar, Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), World Health Organization, Redalyc, Springer, books, and health reports. As results we can mention according to the studies carried out, it was verified that in the majority of the cases the diabetic patients reported high levels of both Cystanin C and microalbuminuria. In conclusion, biomarkers such as microalbuminuria and Cystanin C can be valuable tools in the early diagnosis of kidney diseases, especially in patients with diabetes. Early detection of renal dysfunction with biomarkers such as Cystanin C and microalbuminuria allows the application of preventive and therapeutic measures to prevent the progression of chronic kidney disease in diabetic patients. Diagnosis should be made by a trained medical professional considering other clinical and laboratory factors.
