Abstract

A biomarker is a measurable indicator of a patient's clinical condition that can be accurately and reproducibly determined in the laboratory. The objective was to analyze the main biomarkers associated with the diagnosis of sepsis and septic shock. A qualitative systematic review design study was conducted by consulting the following databases: PubMed, ScienceDirect, Dialnet, Scielo, and Google Scholar. Articles published in the last five years were included. The most commonly used biomarkers for the diagnosis of sepsis and septic shock are: Procalcitonin, C-reactive protein, lactate, and interleukin-6. According to studies, the combination of procalcitonin and C-reactive protein shows that you have better results. Regarding emerging biomarkers, there are several very promising ones for the diagnosis and prognosis of mortality in sepsis and septic shock, such as presepsin, the pancreatic stone protein, the soluble protein of the urokinase plasminogen activator receptor, and other molecules expressed in leukocytes. In conclusion, sepsis and septic shock have a complex pathophysiology that involves hyperinflammation, coagulopathy and immunosuppression, and proper management of this clinical picture and therefore the reduction in mortality requires the support of reliable biomarkers for early recognition of the disease.
