Abstract

Upper respiratory tract infections occur in children under 5 years of age, have high morbidity and there are numerous factors that contribute to their development. The objective of the research is to identify the main and most frequent causes of upper respiratory tract infection in children. A bibliographic study was carried out on upper respiratory tract infections in children collected from databases such as PubMed, Medline, Scielo and Google Scholar. The results suggest that upper respiratory tract infections are more frequent (88.2%) and among them the common cold; the most frequent symptoms: rhinorrhea (56.3%), fever (48.8%) and cough (40%); the highest environmental risk factors: humidity, contact with patients with acute respiratory infection and dust and the social risk factors: poorly ventilated housing and overcrowding. Respiratory infections in children under 5 years of age are the most frequent and the most common origin is viral. The most common virus is RSV, influenza A and B. Among the most common bacteria, Streptococcus pneumoniae is reported.
