Ferroptosis is an iron-dependent process of regulated cell death in which there is a mechanism linked to the formation and accumulation of reactive oxygen species that affect the functionality of the cell and eventually lead to its death. On the other hand, metabolic diseases associated with overweight, and obesity show a rapid increase globally, evidence has been found of the presence of non-alcoholic hepatic steatosis in patients with diabetes, hypertension, and metabolic syndrome, having in these individuals a rapid progression towards steatohepatitis, fibrosis and cirrhosis. Recent research links elevated iron levels as a link in the pathogenesis of hepatic steatosis and its complications. Although this mechanism of cell death is not completely elucidated, it could provide new approaches in terms of the use of diagnostic biomarkers and possible therapeutics to reverse liver damage generated by chronic inflammation and fibrosis caused by oxidative stress, using ferroptosis inhibitory molecules. Finally, the role of this type of cell death in the pathogenesis of various chronic diseases, including several types of cancer, has been considered, which in turn enables its use as a possible line of treatment for these diseases.
