Gastrointestinal diseases are those that affect the digestive tract, they can manifest as non-malignant lesions that if left untreated can become precursors of cancer, therefore, in this study, the objective was to evaluate the diagnostic utility of the fecal occult blood technique in asymptomatic patients with gastrointestinal diseases, This study was carried out with the application of a documentary design methodology, using scientific databases such as PubMed, LILACS, SciELO, Dialnet, Google Scholar, reports from the Ministry of Public Health and the official website of the World Health Organization, obtaining as result that the screening programs are focused on the early discovery of occult bleeding and that most of the countries have the fecal immunochemical test as the preferred test, in which, at the time of detecting positive occult blood and follow up, polyps, advanced adenomas and colorectal cancer are frequently detected. The conclusion was that for the detection of gastrointestinal diseases, countries opt for the use of these tests for early diagnosis and it is evident that few Latin American countries have organized screening programs.
