Abstract

Care illiteracy limits the quality of critical care, affecting the understanding and implementation of key interventions in intensive care units. The objective was to describe the dimensions of care illiteracy that limit the implementation of comprehensive care in ICUs. A qualitative study was conducted. Using a descriptive literature review design, the study population consisted of 52 articles, with a sample of 27 articles from recognized databases such as PubMed, Scopus, MEDLINE, Latindex, Springer, SciELO, and Crossref. Academic search tools such as Google Scholar and reference sources such as the Institute for Scientific Information were also consulted. Article selection considered specific eligibility criteria to ensure the relevance and quality of the publications. Care illiteracy in Intensive Care Units limited comprehensive care by impacting dimensions such as emotional, ethical, digital, and organizational training. Cultural and structural barriers hindered staff autonomy and patient participation. However, although continuing education improved skills, it was insufficient given the complexity of these environments.
