Hypertension is a public health problem that affects a large proportion of the world population and is considered the main risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. Its treatment can be pharmacological and non-pharmacological. Among the non-pharmacological strategies, physical activity is a priority due to its widely demonstrated positive effects; however, the recommendation is almost always focused on the prescription of aerobic physical activity. Strength or resistance physical activity had previously been discouraged due to the theoretical short-term hypertensive effects. This review article aims to describe the available scientific evidence on the effect of strength and resistance exercise in patients with arterial hypertension. This article collects evidence from a total of 9 clinical studies carried out in a population with arterial hypertension and the effects on blood pressure and other variables of interest. The results of the articles consulted show that strength and resistance exercise are valid and safe strategies to carry out in patients with arterial hypertension.
